Description

Summer squash is difficult to grow in the subtropics, but Cocozelle zucchini grows quickly, reducing the chance for environmental pressures. UF recommends it as one the best varieties for Florida gardening.

If you’ve had trouble growing squash in the hot and humid South, maybe you just haven’t grown the right variety. In subtropical and hot climates, the secret is to choose vegetables that mature quickly, in order to outpace any pest and disease pressure.

With its nutty and savory flavor profile and fast maturity, cocozelle zucchini may be what you’re looking for.

Listed by the University of Florida as one of the best varieties for hot climates, this pretty little summer squash delivers a delicious squash in only 43-48 days.

This Italian heirloom vegetable has been bred for warmer climates and is non-GMO, heirloom, and open-pollinated, so you can collect seeds that will grow true for next year.

It has a bushy growing habit, so it’s perfect for small gardens, containers, or bio-intensive growing. It doesn’t take up much space at only 2-3 feet tall.

Plant in the fall garden in Zones 8-9, throughout the winter in Zones 10-12, and in the spring in cooler zones once soil temperatures reach 70°F.

TIPS FOR GERMINATION

You can start Cocozelle zuchinni seeds in cells or soil blocks or sown directly in the garden

  • To start indoors or under cover, sow seeds in large cells, large soil blocks, or small pots about 4-6 weeks before planting out.
  • Use a light seed sowing mix and plant seeds about 1 inch deep.
  • Keep soil moist with misting or bottom watering until germination.
  • Keep warm at about 75°F to 85°F.
  • Germinates in approximately 7 to 14 days.
  • Plant into the garden or large container (3-5 gallon) once the plant has developed several sets of true leaves.
  • Provide with a slow-release organic vegetable fertilizer to help plant establish.
  • Keep soil moist during the first week after planting out and then provide at least 1 inch of water twice a week or as required by your local conditions to keep soil regularly moist.
  • Mulching the root zone will help to retain moisture.
  • Feed plants with a balanced vegetable fertilizer during active growth and when flowering.

To sow directly:

  • Prepare the soil by forming low mounds in the garden about 3 to 4 feet apart.
  • Form the raised mounds using plenty of organic matter into the mound, such as compost or composted manure.
  • Sow three to five seeds per mound, about 1 inch deep.
  • Water mounds well and mist daily until germination occurs.
  • Water regularly to help plants establish.
