Description
Purple Coneflower thrives in poor soil and arid conditions. Echinacea purpurea requires little to no feeding, which makes these a maintenance-free plant once established.
Many garden designers choose echinacea varieties to create natural habitats and wild areas in the landscape because of their hardiness and benefits to bees, butterflies, and other wildlife.
These hardy plants may reseed prolifically, and if not, you may propagate by lifting and dividing the root mass every three or five years for even more flowers in your garden.
Many advocates use the roots and flowers in herbal tea. But best of all, these lovely native wildflowers offer food for native bees, bumble bees, butterflies, and birds.
As well as helping to provide forage and habitat for wildlife, Purple Coneflower is also grown for its medicinal uses.
Tips for Growing Echinacea purpurea
Germination results for planting Purple coneflower may be improved by a moist stratification technique. Mix your seed with a small amount of moist sand or coir and store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for 7 days. Alternatively, plant in the fall to allow winter to do the trick.
Stratification isn’t mandatory but will improve germination results.
