Description

Blanket Flower, or Gaillardia aristata, is native to North America and is the perennial cousin of Indian Blanket Flower. Home to the Western U.S., it is more tolerant of poor soils and features larger blooms.

This North American native prairie wildflower is at home in the Western United States and is drought and heat tolerant. It’s highly suitable for wildflower and prairie gardens or for wildlife areas.

You may hear it called “Common Gaillardia” or “Brown-Eyed Susans.”

Benefits of Blanket Flower

  • Attracts native bees, bumblebees, and butterflies
  • Provides seeds for birds
  • Heat and drought tolerant
  • Excellent choice for xeriscaping
  • Low maintenance
  • Suitable for cut flowers

Tips for Growing Gaillardia aristate

To sow indoors up to 4 weeks before the final frost date, use large cells or small pots, as Blanket Flower roots can be sensitive and damage easily during transplanting. Transplant into the garden about 18 to 24 inches apart as soon as possible and water regularly during the first week or two while plants establish.

Otherwise, direct sow ¼ inch deep into prepared garden bed once soil temperatures have reached 65 degrees F. Press down lightly to increase contact with the soil. Water well and keep the seeds moist until germination occurs. Thin bed to 24 inches apart and provide moisture until plants have developed.

Deadhead regularly to increase blooming. Otherwise, cut back spent flowers in the fall to prepare for winter dormancy.
