Description

Native to the subtropical and tropical areas of the Americas, especially South American rain forests, it looks exotic and tropical while thriving in a temperate climate summer.

The individual vines may be light and delicate and often need training, but they grow quickly in warm weather and full sun. Vines grow up to 10 feet long and spread up to 6 feet wide.

The deep purple flowers ranging from 3 to 5 inches in diameter are stunning. New flowers appear every day – early in the morning (hence the name) – and bloom continuously throughout the summer to fall.

Hummingbirds adore morning glories, and they attract butterflies as well.

Morning glories make excellent hanging flower baskets or should be trellised up a support frame. They have an Award of Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society as a proven performer in the garden.

Seeds should not be ingested and plants may be toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.

TIPS FOR GERMINATION

Before planting your morning glories, determine where they will be best supported. Make sure you are able to provide them with somewhere to grow before direct sowing or before planting out. Placing supports before adding the plants helps to prevent damage to the roots.

For faster germination, nick seed carefully with a razor and soak overnight in warm water before planting.

Direct sow your morning glories in a sunny location at least 6 inches apart in your flower bed approximately ¼- ½ inch deep. Water in well and keep moist until germination. Seeds should germinate in 10 to 21 days and bloom within 120 days.

You can also start them indoors in generously sized cell trays about 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Water well and keep soil moist until germination. Plant about ¼ deep and cover with perlite or starting medium. When plants develop true leaves, begin hardening off.

Plant out at least 6 inches apart and water in well. Water daily the first week until vine establishes and then once a week or as needed. You may also want to ensure it is climbing in the direction you desire.

Mulch around the base of the plants if desired to help retain moisture. You can also use compost to provide nutrients. However, avoid overwatering and fertilizing once plants have reached a good size, as it can reduce the amount of flowers produced.

Seed can be collected from dried seed head in late fall and winter for planting in the spring. This purple variety of Ipomea may self-seed in warm climates and over mild winters.
