Description
Native to the subtropical and tropical areas of the Americas, especially South American rain forests, Scarlet O’Hara morning glory looks exotic and tropical while thriving in a temperate climate summer.
The individual vines may be light and delicate and often need training, but they grow quickly in warm weather and full sun. Vines grow up to 10 feet long and spread up to 6 feet wide.
The bright pink flowers range are about 4 inches in diameter and are stunning. New flowers appear every day – early in the morning (hence the name) – and bloom continuously throughout the summer to fall.
Hummingbirds adore morning glories, and they attract butterflies as well.
Morning glories make excellent hanging flower baskets or should be trellised up a support frame. They have an Award of Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society as a proven performer in the garden.
Do not injest Scarlet O’Hara morning glory seeds. The plants may be toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
TIPS FOR GERMINATION
Direct sow your morning glories in a sunny location at least 6 inches apart in your flower bed approximately ¼- ½ inch deep.
You can also start them indoors in generously sized cell trays about 4-6 weeks before the last frost.
