Description

San Marzano tomatoes are easily the best paste tomatoes you can grow for sauces or canning. With firm flesh and few seeds, making homemade marina is a breeze with these heirloom plum tomatoes.

Better yet, they’re determinate, so if you plant them in the early fall, you can harvest before the first frost for freezing, canning, or cooking. You see, determinate tomatoes grow to a predetermined size and will produce all of their fruit at once. So, you won’t have to worry about covering them during January cold snaps if they’ve already fruited.

San Marzano tomatoes only grow about 4 feet tall, so you can support them with just a tomato cage. Because they’re short, they’re easy to pick and since they’re bush types, they won’t require constant pruning.

San Marzanos mature in just 80 days, when you can harvest your next pot of spaghetti sauce.

If you live in a hot, humid climate, you’ll find San Marzano tomatoes outperform Roma for resistance to disease.

TIPS FOR GERMINATION

Start tomatoes indoors or undercover to protect seedlings from extreme temperatures and heavy rains. Sow seeds in cell trays or soil blocks approximately 6-8 weeks before planting out. Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep and keep the soil mix moist with misting or bottom watering until germination occurs. Keep warm at about 70°F to 80°F.
