Description

The Philodendron Brazil (Philodendron Brazil) or Philodendron hederaceum ‘Brasil’ is a popular and unique cultivar of the usual heartleaf philodendron. It makes a great beginner houseplant as it’s easy to care for while being unique for its variegation.

This plant has a fast growth rate, but the vines can be delicate. They can be trellised or trained to climb, however, they do best as a hanging plant where they can drop their vines elegantly.

Philodendron Brazil Care

Open your plant as soon as it arrives. It has been in a dark box with no water or light for several days. Check the root ball in the bag and add a little water if it’s dried out. Place the plant in the bag in a warm, low-light area as soon as you can. Give your Philodendron hederaceum ‘Brasil’ at least 48 hours to recover from shipping shock before transplanting it.

The best way to care for houseplants is to give them similar conditions to those from which they originate. The Philodendron hederaceum ‘Brasil’ is native to the South American jungle and prefers tropical conditions.

Philodendron hederaceum ‘Brasil’ is hardy to Zones 11 and 12 but can be grown outdoors in Zones 9 and 10 if brought indoors during cold nights. Philodendron Brasil prefers a temperature of about 75°F to 85°F. They will tolerate higher temperatures, however, as long as the humidity is sufficient. In cooler zones, grow indoors in bright, indirect light, and keep at 50% to 60% humidity

The trickiest part of caring for your Philodendron Brazil is getting the lighting right. It’s a tropical plant that is native to the understory of the South American rainforests, so it doesn’t tolerate bright sunlight. Too little, however, and your plant may “revert” and begin to lose its unique yellow variegation.

The young leaves of the Brazilian Philodendron do grow out dark green, however, they will develop their yellow markings as they mature. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves.

They prefer an acidic soil that is rich in organic matter but also well-draining. You can create your own by mixing potting soil with an orchid mix. Once transplanted, water your plant in well, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Allow the first two inches of soil to dry out before watering.

Pruning will create a bushier plant, and you can use trimmed vines to start new plants.

Fertilize your Philodendron monthly during the spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer for acid loving plants.
