Description
German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) has been cultivated since ancient times, originating in Western Asia before spreading across Europe where it became essential for herbal medicine and relaxation teas.
The delicate white daisy-like flowers with bright yellow centers bloom prolifically from late spring through summer, releasing an sweet apple-like fragrance when brushed or harvested.
Each plant reaches 1-2 feet tall with fine, feathery foliage that creates an airy, delicate texture in garden beds.
This annual herb variety contains exceptionally high amounts of chamazulene, the essential oil responsible for chamomile’s characteristic sweet and floral scent.
Unlike perennial Roman Chamomile, German Chamomile grows taller and produces more flowers, making it the preferred choice for tea production and larger garden displays.
Once established, it tolerates drought remarkably well and readily self-seeds for continuous harvests year after year.
Benefits of Growing German Chamomile
German Chamomile attracts beneficial insects including tiny parasitic wasps, hoverflies, and native bees.
The flowers can be harvested fresh or dried for herbal teas, potpourri, skin care preparations, and natural remedies that have been used for reducing inflammation and promoting calm for thousands of years.
