Sugar Babies are the perfect mini-watermelon that won’t have you struggling to find room in the fridge.

TIPS FOR GERMINATION

You can plant Sugar Baby watermelon seeds in either small pots or soil blocks or directly in the ground.

  • To start indoors or under cover, use large soil blocks or small (3″) nursery pots with a seed starting mix that is not too dense or heavy.
  • Sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep.
  • Keep soil moist with misting or bottom watering until germination occurs.
  • Keep warm at about 70°F to 80°F.
  • Prepare to plant out into the garden in about 4 to 5 weeks. If you need to keep them in the pots longer, provide them with some liquid fertilizer.
  • Once roots have populated the starting medium and the plant has two or more sets of true leaves, plant into the garden or a large container (5 gallons recommended).

To sow directly:

  • Prepare the soil by forming low mounds in the garden about 3 to 4 feet apart.
  • Form the raised mounds using plenty of organic matter into the mound, such as compost or composted manure.
  • Sow three to five seeds per mound, about 1 inch deep.
  • Water mounds well and mist daily until germination occurs.
  • Water regularly to help plants establish.
