Description

Sooyow Nishiki Japanese cucumbers are super heat-tolerant cucumbers and easy to grow in the Florida fall garden. They also do well in Louisiana and South Texas.

The secret is planting them at the right time and making sure you trellis them and keep them off the ground.

These Sooyow Nishiki Japanese cucumbers are short-vined, so they won’t need to crawl up high.

These Sooyow Nishiki Japanese cucumbers LOOK scary, but they’re sweet and delicious and super crisp. You don’t even have to peel them! (The spikes wash right off!)

If you’ve had trouble growing cucumbers in the hot and humid South, maybe you just haven’t grown the right variety. In subtropical and hot climates, the secret is to choose vegetables that mature quickly, in order to outpace any pest and disease pressure.

The thin-skinned and non-bitter Sooyow Nishiki cucumbers mature in only 50-60 days.

And they make the BEST refrigerator pickles. A little salt, a little sugar, a dash of rice vinegar, and a couple of hours in the fridge, and you have the perfect side for any Asian meal.

  • Plant into the garden or large container (3-5 gallon) once the plant has developed several sets of true leaves.
  • Provide with a trellis to keep vines off the ground to prevent disease.
  • Provide with a slow-release organic vegetable fertilizer to help plant establish.
  • Keep soil moist during the first week after planting out and then provide at least 1 inch of water twice a week or as required by your local conditions to keep soil regularly moist.
  • Mulching the root zone will help to retain moisture.
