Description

Many garden designers choose echinacea varieties to create natural habitats and wild areas in the landscape because of their hardiness and benefits to bees, butterflies, and other wildlife.

They also thrive in poor soil and arid conditions. They require little to no feeding, which makes these a maintenance-free plant once established.

These hardy plants may reseed prolifically, and if not, you may propagate by lifting and dividing the root mass every three or five years for even more flowers in your garden.

The roots and flowers are commonly used in herbal tea, but best of all, these lovely native wildflowers offer food for native bees, bumble bees, butterflies, and birds.

Tips for Growing Echinecea purpurea

Germination results for planting Purple coneflower may be improved by a moist stratification technique. Mix your seed with a small amount of moist sand or coir and store in an air-tight container in the refrigerator for 7 days. Alternatively, plant in the fall to allow winter to do the trick.

Stratification isn’t mandatory but will improve germination results.

Direct sow in a sunny location in average to poor soil at a depth of ¼ inch. Keep soil moist until germination occurs, about 10 to 21 days.

You can also start them indoors in generously sized cell trays about 7-8 weeks before the last frost. Plant about ¼ deep and cover with perlite or starting medium. When plants develop true leaves, you can begin hardening them off for planting out.

Plant out at 12-15 inches apart and water in well. Top dress with compost or organic matter to help the plant establish and retain moisture while it establishes.

After the first week, avoid overwatering and overfeeding. Purple Coneflowers are drought resistant and require little nutrients. You can top dress with compost or feed once in the early spring once it breaks winter dormancy.

Seed can be collected from dried seedheads in late fall and winter for planting in the spring.
