Whether you call it eggplant, brinjal, aubergine, or guinea squash, this delicious veg is perfect for gardens in subtropical and tropical Zones 8 through 12.

Black Beauty eggplant likes plenty of moisture, full sun, and lots of heat, thriving in hot, humid climates. It’s also a perennial in hot climates, as long as you protect it from any overnight cold snaps with a sheet or frost cover.

The UF/IFAS Agriculture education center endorses it as one of the best eggplant varieties for Florida gardeners, and it does just as well for other states around the Gulf Coast and steamy South.

These Black Beauty eggplant seeds are non-GMO heirlooms and open-pollinated, so you can collect seeds to plant next year, too.

Black Beauty matures in 74 days, so they’re quick to provide you with deep purple, glossy, and heavy fruits.

TIPS FOR GERMINATION

For best results, sow seeds in cells or soil blocks about 6 weeks before planting out.

  • Use a light seed sowing mix and plant seeds about 1/2 inch deep.
  • Keep soil moist with misting or bottom watering until germination.
Keep warm at about 75°F to 85°F.
  • Germinates in approximately 5 to 12 days.
  • Plant into the garden or larger container once the plant has developed several sets of true leaves.
  • Provide with a slow-release organic fertilizer to help plant establish.
  • Keep soil moist during the first week after planting out and then provide at least 1 inch of water twice a week or as required by your local conditions to keep soil regularly moist.
  • Mulching the root zone will help to retain moisture.
  • Feed plants with a balanced vegetable fertilizer during active growth and when flowering.
