Description
Perpetual spinach chard is one of those rare leafy vegetable that thrives in subtropical climates.
It’s also called Leaf Beet, Spinach Beet Chard, and in Japan, it’s known as Umaina.
It tastes like regular spinach, but won’t wilt and bolt at 85°F .
Best of all, the more you harvest, the more it grows. While it’s not exactly a perennial vegetable, it will produce plenty of delicious and nutritious greens for a year or more in Zones 9-11.
Cut and come again, and perpetual spinach chard will just grow back.
Harvest small leaves in salads or cook larger leaves like traditional spinach.

TIPS FOR GERMINATION
- For best results, sow perpetual spinach chard seeds in cells or soil blocks about 8 weeks before planting out.
- Use a light seed sowing mix and plant seeds about 1/3 – 1/2 inch deep.
- Keep soil moist with misting or bottom watering until germination.
- Keep warm at about 70°F to 80°F.
- Germinates in approximately 7 to 10 days.
- Plant into the garden or larger container once plant has developed several sets of true leaves.
- Provide with a slow-release organic fertilizer to help plant establish.
- Keep soil moist during the first week after planting out and then provide at least 1 inch of water per week or as required by your local conditions.
- Mulching the root zone will help to retain moisture.
- Feed plants diluted nitrogen-rich fertilizer once during active growth.
