Description

Listed by the University of Florida as one of the best varieties for hot climates, this easy-to-grow sweet pepper delivers crisp, bright green 3-4″ squared peppers.

California Wonder is the classic variety for salads or stuffing. They’re ready to pick when green or allow them to ripen to yellow or bright red for a sweeter flavor.

They’re even perennial in Zones 9-11 with a little extra care in the winter.

Their bushy, upright growth habit makes them perfect for large containers, so you can overwinter them indoors.

They’re also great for small gardens or bio-intensive growing. They don’t take up much space at only 2-3 feet tall.

These seeds are non-GMO, heirloom, and open-pollinated types, so you can easily collect seeds that will grow true next year.

Plant in the fall garden in Zones 8-9, throughout the winter in Zones 10-12, and in the spring in cooler zones once soil temperatures reach 70°F.

Growth Habit: Bushy
Height: 2 to 3 feet

TIPS FOR GERMINATION
We recommend you start peppers early in cells or soil blocks at least 6-8 weeks before planting outdoors.

  • Sow seeds in large cells, large soil blocks, or small pots using a light seed-sowing mix
  • Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep.
  • Keep soil moist with misting or bottom watering until germination.
  • Keep warm at about 75°F to 85°F.
  • Germinates in approximately 7 to 21 days — peppers can be slow to start, which is why we recommend allowing plenty of lead time before planting out.
  • Pot up as necessary as roots populate the starting medium.
  • Pinch back top growth to encourage branching
  • Once the plant has been pinched back and grown back to about 10-12″ tall, it’s time to plant out.
  • Plant into the garden or a large container (5 gallons)
  • Provide a slow-release organic vegetable fertilizer or plenty of compost to help plant establish.
  • Keep soil moist during the first week after planting out and then provide at least 1 inch of water twice a week or as required by your local conditions to keep soil regularly moist.
  • Mulching the root zone will help to retain moisture.
  • Feed plants with a balanced vegetable fertilizer during active growth and when flowering.
