Question 1

When should I plant Contender bush bean seeds?

Accepted Answer

Plant Contender seeds outdoors 1 to 2 weeks after your last spring frost when soil temperature reaches at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit. For best germination, wait until soil warms to 70 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Make successive sowings every 2 weeks for continuous harvests.

Question 2

Why are Contender beans considered early?

Accepted Answer

Contender produces harvestable pods in just 49 to 50 days from direct sowing, about a week earlier than most other bush bean varieties. This early maturity makes them ideal for short-season climates and allows time for succession plantings or fall crops.

Question 3

Do Contender bush beans need support?

Accepted Answer

No, Contender is a true bush variety with upright plants 12 to 20 inches tall that require no staking or trellising. The sturdy plants hold pods off the ground for clean, easy harvesting.

Question 4

Are Contender beans stringless?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Contender produces completely stringless pods that stay tender even at full size. The smooth, round-oval pods have excellent eating quality fresh, frozen, or canned.

Question 5

Can I grow Contender bush beans in containers?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Contender's compact bush habit makes it excellent for container growing. Use pots at least 8 to 10 inches deep with good drainage. Space plants 3 to 4 inches apart and water more frequently than in-ground beans.
