Description
Milkweed for Monarchs
Swamp Milkweed is a key species in the life cycle of monarch butterflies. Milkweed is the sole host plant for monarch caterpillars, so growing milkweed will help support their population.
This North American native species is suitable for damp gardens and soggy patches of the landscape.
Swamp Milkweed Description
Swamp Milkweed features lance-shaped leaves and clusters of pinkish-mauve flowers atop sturdy stems.
The flowers measure approximately 2 to 4 inches (5 to 10 cm) in diameter, and come in a range of shades of pink, rose, and mauve.
Their fragrance attracts a variety of pollinators, including butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.
It’s a clump-forming perennial with an upright growth habit. It typically reaches a height of 3 to 5 feet and spreads about 1 to 2 feet wide. This stunning wildflower blooms from mid to late summer, with flowering typically lasting for several weeks. It takes approximately 2 to 3 years to reach its full maturity.
