Tips for Growing Wild Delphinium

You can improve the germination of Wild Delphiniums by cold-stratifying the seeds in the refrigerator for 7 to 10 days. Rocket Larkspur prefers cooler temperatures, so is a good choice for early spring sowing.

Seeds can also be direct sown into the garden once soil temperatures reach 55. Cover well, as darkness stimulates germination.

You can also start your Rocket Larkspur seeds in large cell trays up to 8 weeks before your last frost date at a depth of ¼ inch. Cover with soil or starter mix. Water well and keep dark until seeds germinate. Seeds germinate best at temperatures above 55 degrees Fahrenheit.

Keep moist, but do not overwater to prevent seed rot. Once seeds germinate, provide light and keep cool until first true leaves appear.

In warm climates, Wild Delphinium seeds can be sown in late fall for early spring bloom. In frost-free regions, start indoors and plant out in late autumn for winter color.

If transplanting, plant into the garden as soon as possible. Handle fragile roots carefully to avoid damaging the plant’s deep taproot. Space approximately 4 to 6 inches apart.

Plant in sun or partial shade in good soil that offers plenty of organic matter. Rocket Larkspur can be heat sensitive, so consider a partially shady spot if your climate is hot.

Water plants in well and keep the soil moist until the plant is established. Afterward, water as needed. Fertilizer isn’t required if the soil is amended with compost when the flowers are planted.
