Description

The common red poppy, sometimes called the Flanders Poppy, can grow in any zone in the U.S. as a summer annual. They are drought tolerant and thrive in many types of soil, and reseed so prolifically that you may never need to plant them again.

Papaver rhoeas are very attractive to bees because they provide so much pollen, particularly bumblebees and honeybees. If you’re lucky enough to have Poppy Mason Bees in your region, they will harvest the flower petals to line their nests.

Tips for Growing Red Poppies

Sow directly into the garden once soil temperatures are around 70 degrees F. Choose a sunny location and prepare your garden bed by adding compost or other organic matter. Rake over lightly to improve tilth and moisten the soil well. Scatter seeds very lightly and press seeds into soil. Do not cover with soil, as they require light to germinate. Mist regularly to keep the soil moist without disturbing the seeds.

Keep soil moist until plants have developed true leaves. Thin to approximately 6 to 12 inches apart. And water as needed for your climate. Warm climate gardeners can sow their poppy seeds in the fall for spring growth.
