Description

Meadow Blazing Star (Liatris ligulistylis), also called Round-headed Blazing Star or Rocky Mountain Blazing Star, stands as the grandad of the Liatris family with impressive 5-foot tall spikes of brilliant fuchsia-pink blooms.

This striking native wildflower bursts with star-shaped flowers in late summer and early fall when many other perennials have finished blooming, providing critical nectar for migrating butterflies and hummingbirds.

The plant is never lonely — winged creatures including bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds constantly hover over its showy flower spikes.

Native to the American West and first documented by French botanist Andre Michaux about a decade before the Lewis and Clark expedition, Meadow Blazing Star has been cultivated for centuries for its amazing ability to attract pollinators.

The species name “ligulistylis” means “tongue-like style” and refers to the unique structures inside each tiny flower. While slow to establish as it develops extensive root systems, this perennial rewards patience by lasting many years in dry soils and blooming reliably once mature.

Deer resistant and drought tolerant once established, it also flourishes in moist soil, making it adaptable to various garden conditions.
